About Norman Lamont
A leading light in the Edinburgh songwriter scene, Norman Lamont has a wealth of slightly skew-wiff songs from epics like The Ballad of Bob Dylan and The Wolf Who Snared the Moon, through surreal tales like Polecats and New Eyes to intimate statements like Crying in the Street and If You Had Said.
In his long music career he has played support to John Renbourne, Michael Chapman, John Cooper Clarke, the Coal Porters and Ballboy. Between 1992 and 1997 he led the band Hungry Ghosts, finalists in the Edinburgh Festival song competition and semifinalists in The List Battle of the Bands. He has been played or performed live on BBC Radio Scotland and various local radio stations. His songwriting has won several awards including, in 2006, Best CD and Best Acoustic Act in Edinburgh’s Acoustic Underground poll. The Ballad of Bob Dylan was placed on the American tribute album Thinking About Bob Dylan, and won the rare accolade of ‘Most Shouted For Song’ at Edinburgh’s Full Moon Club! His band Norman Lamont and the Innocents played extensively from 2003 to 2006, including London’s Twelve Bar club.
Norman can play acoustic, or enhance his sound with electronic loops and guitar synth; he also likes to throw in diverse cover versions from the Beatles to Jacques Brel.
As well as his own career, Norman has performed as guitarist, bassist and producer for many Edinburgh. Outside the songwriting field, he has composed music for two independent films, Godot (US) and Ferry Forth (Scotland), and performs ambient meditative instrumentals inspired by Robert Fripp’s Soundscapes under the name WaveForms.
