Species 8472 is not a band. Species 8472 is an Internet-based project that’s always under construction. Like the Star Trek creature from fluidic space whose name it borrows, it’s a shapeshifting beast which comes at you from everywhere at once.
Founded and directed by musicians Alasdair Wright and Clare O'Brien from their home in the Scottish Highlands, Species 8472 constantly adapts, reaching out and involving musicians and artists from other parts of the world and using the Internet to communicate, write and record. Participants are of all ages and ancestries, both genders but a common language – music.
Species 8472 exists to write, record and perform original music with a smattering of inventive covers. Released in the spring of 2006, Power Up is its first CD.
Species 8472 is music from nowhere.
Involved with the music on this album are:
Alasdair Wright Musical director and originator…Highlander by blood and Londoner by upbringing, he spent his youth doing session work as a pianist, keyboard player and programmer and returned to the Highlands in 1999 to live and work on a croft in Inverasdale, Wester Ross.
Clare O’Brien The project’s main lyricist and ideas factory. She was born in London with Spanish ancestry, but lives and works in Wester Ross as a musician, writer and organic farmer. Loves water, mountains and movies.
Susanna Wolfe Irish-born singer, songwriter and rock chick. She’s been compared to P J Harvey, Tori Amos and Siouxsie. Don’t mess with this one when the moon’s full.
Ally Craig Young musician and cartoonist currently based in Oxford – pioneer of wheelchair rock and a great guitar player and songwriter.
Davie Martin Drummer, percussionist and music teacher. Can get a musical sound out of anything, including chairsprings and bowls of water.
Davie Munro Guitarist and sound engineer. Davie loves dogs and computers.
Callum Wright Alasdair and Clare's 13-year old son. Did the drawing for the album cover, loves crofting, art and System of a Down.
