Mairi MacInnes was born on the beautiful island of South Uist and enjoyed singing from an early age in her native Gaelic tongue. In 1982 she became one of the youngest winners of the prestigious Gold Medal at the National Mod in Skye and two years later won the Pan Celtic Festival in Killarney. Since then she has become a well established singer and is heard often on radio and TV. This is her second solo album (first for Greentrax) and she also recorded with and toured as a member of the group Mouth Music.
Her new album - "THIS FEELING INSIDE" - was recorded in April, 1995, at Castle-Cava Studios, Pencaitland. and was produced by Billy Jackson, who also plays clarsach, flute, whistles and keyboard on the album. Mairi was in great form, singing a lovely mixture of Gaelic and other songs, including some joint compositions by Main and husband Steve. Additional instrumental backing was by Foss Paterson (piano and keyboard); Wendy Weatherby (cello and backing vocals on Track 11); Tony McManus (guitars); James MacKintosh, of Shooglenifty, (percussion); & Fred Morrison, who recently joined Capercaillie, (pipes). The production and instrumental backing is most sensitive and the end result is an album which should appeal to Gaels but will have international appeal as well. There are many outstanding tracks but the title track of the album - "This Feeling Inside" - has our vote for the 'best track of the album'.
Mairi was recently featured on BBC Radio Scotland and on Grampian Television. |
