About Duncan Ferguson

Duncan's new album has a drive and an energy which stand out from the previous works, and has a maturity of style & confidence. The benefits of his constantly working at his craft are apparent in the new album.

Tall Ship

I wrote this song about the white slave trade, which flourished in in the 17th and 18th century. Thousands of slaves were kidnapped, whipped and put in chains, and transported to the plantations of colonial where they were then worked to death. Many of the unfortunates were shipped from the Highlands of Scotland and transported to Norfolk Virginia, which at that time was part of the British Colonies. Records in the Orlando Library tell the plight of thousand of Highlanders who became white slaves in colonial . Records still exist in Aberdeen City Archives, telling of the white slave trade and the Scottish ports of exit of many of those poor unfortunate wretches.

The Right Side of Lonesome

This song is a contrast of bitter-sweet love and betrayal. The woman in the song seeks passion and romance in the arms of her new found paramour, but ultimately knows that she has a choice to make between her husband and her lover.

Country Song

Each one of us has expectations and dreams that we sometimes can’t hold on to, no matter how hard we try. We meet and fall in love, and as time goes by, we spend less and less time in each other\'s company, eventually drifting apart and having to pick up the pieces and move on.

If love

During youth, we sometimes fall deeply in love. We think, “I’ll love this person for the rest of my natural born life” However, young love wears it’s heart on it\'s sleeve, and in life there are no certainties.. It’s a roller coaster ride, and once you\'re on, you just can’t get off.

Guitar Song

This song is about my love of music and my long-standing relationship with my acoustic guitar. It has always been with me through good times, and bad, in times of happiness, and sorrow. It helped me write my first song, and it continues to be a source of inspiration to me.

Dance with the devil

This song tells the story of a woman of dubious character, who is living a lie. She already has a home and a family but she hides that fact from her lover. She is warm on the outside, while inside she hides her true motives from him, and uses every situation to her advantage.

Big Whisky

When I was a child I’d watch movies about cowboys riding the range. Their exploits never failed to fascinate me... My father\'s Clydesdale horse would become a sleek Palomino, and I would ride bareback though the woods six-gun strapped to my hip, ready for any desperadoes who might appear in the horizon. Big Whisky is the reincarnation of my childhood thoughts, riding on my Palomino across the wide-open plain, beneath the clear blue skies of the prairie.

Flight 103

I dedicate this song to all that suffer at the hands of terrorists, the plague that infests our modern-world. They rise like Lucifer from the depths of hell, engulfing all, then descending back from whence they came, hiding, cowardly in the shadows, and waiting to rise again, to sow their hate filled seeds on the fertile soil of youth.

Tin Roof

While writing this song, I was thinking of the Caribbean and of Reggae music, and of palm trees circling a blue lagoon, and of an old man sitting outside his shack while the sun beats down upon his old tin roof.

Lonely Tonight

This song is about a close friend whose partner was terminally ill and was eventually taken from him. He still has trouble dealing with the situation and finds himself in denial, even though in his heart, he knows that she has gone forever.

The Long Road

It\'s sometimes good to blow away the cobwebs, and to drive the highways and the open road, and go to places that I\'ve never been to before. There are wonderful things to see, and new people to meet. The wheels turn, the sound of the engine beckons, and the freedom of the open road is before me. Still, after two weeks on the road I always get to thinking how nice it would be to be back home, tasting old-home-country cooking again.

Old Joe

This is a true story about a frail elderly man who lived by himself in his remote little cottage on a hillside in Ross-Shire . Two passing strangers came to his door, and because he was a kindly old man, he invited them into his home for refreshments. The two then robbed and killed him.

Love And Understanding

After spending a lot of time apart in a relationship, returning home feels like the first time that you met. When it came time to part, I found that I built a wall in preparation for the coming months apart. Having left, the cycle starts all over again.

Ferryman

This song tells the story of a young man taking the Ferryboat home to his family on an island. It\'s a very dark and stormy night, and his wife and young child wait patiently for his arrival. All that can be heard is the howling of the wind, and the thunder of the waves crashing against the shore. As the sun rises, the storm subsides and the sea returns once again to it\'s tranquil state.

Sweet Music of the Night

In a futile relationship, some people often try to redeem the situation. Although they know in their heart that they face an impossible task, they still hang on in the hope that things will get better with the passage of time. After much soul searching, they recognise that the sparkle has gone, and that love is no more an option.
